Re:  Repeal of AZ Archaic Sex Laws/HB 206
IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED

After years of lobbying by AzCLU and other civil rights/human rights
groups, the Arizona
Legislature passed a bill which would repeal certain outdated,
outrageous laws that attempt
to outlaw private activities of consenting adults.  The bill effectively
makes unmarried
cohabitation, sodomy and having sex without trying to have children no
longer crimes in
Arizona.

STATUS:  The bill, which would remove Arizona's archaic sex laws from
the books, passed
by both the AZ House and Senate is currently waiting for Governor Hull's
signature to
become law.  Governor has until the end of today (Tuesday) to sign the
bill, veto it, or allow
it to become law without her signature.

ACTION: We request that you contact the Governor's office IMMEDIATELY
and urge her
support this law.  You can contact the Governor's office at

Conservative groups have been contacting the Governor's office in force,
pressuring her to
veto this important piece of legislation, so it very important that
supporters contact her office
as well.

BACKGROUND/INFORMATION: ACLU affiliates throughout the country have
worked/are working to eliminate similar "archaic sex laws" from the
books.  While most sodomy laws apply to both heterosexual and gay
people, they are primarily used to deny lesbians and gay men a range of
other rights.  For example, some courts have invoked sodomy laws to
justify taking children away from lesbian and gay parents.  Some cities
have even used sodomy laws to arrest gay people for discussing sex in
conversations which, parallel those heterosexuals have every day.
Sodomy laws were once on the books in 50 states and Puerto Rico, but
they have been repealed or struck down by courts in over 30 states.
